On the flight to Toronto, I read an article in the United airlines magazine about the trend of using unripened jackfruit as a meat substitute. Supposedly it’s all the rage with vegans and vegetarians and is so convincing as a meat that chef’s patrons sometimes think they were served actual meat!

I was fascinated and really wanted to check it out if they had jackfruit meat in Toronto. Luckily, I met a vegan at an Apple Store, and he told me to try Brock Sandwich on Bloor Street West.

The small, unassuming counter-service restaurant had just two patrons inside when I stepped in. Two employees were hard at work in the back and yelled to me asking what I’d like to order.

When I said the BBQ Jackfruit Sandwich, he asked if I wanted it vegan or vegetarian. I told him, “Vegetarian.” I think he asked this because the bread appears to be grilled with butter on it, which would be a problem if you’re a vegan. So I guess they have a non-buttered version of it.

    The jackfruit is served like pulled pork, and looks the part with shreds and lots of light brown sauce oozing from it. It’s dressed with a simple pickled slaw and fresh cilantro.

    So was I fooled into thinking the jackfruit was actual meat?
